Valley Forge
The Winter Encampment at Valley Forge from December 19, 1777 to June 19, 1778 provided General George Washington’s Continental Army an opportunity to demonstrate its ability as a disciplined military unit. Though many soldiers arrived exhausted and without adequate supplies, they nevertheless exuded confidence that eventually, victory would come their way.
The Encampment was a proto-industrial community composed of iron and other mills; textile mills; paper and saw mills; brewery; hotel; stores, blacksmith shops and tanneries. There was also rich farmland surrounding it where Welsh Quaker farmers would cultivate wheat, rye, hay and Indian corn crops.
